The 2024 NBA Draft got off to a historic start.
The Atlanta Hawks kicked off the first round at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on Wednesday by selecting French wing Zaccharie Risacher. The Washington Wizards then took French big man Alex Sarr at No. 2, marking the first time in NBA draft history where international prospects were taken with the first two selections.
To round out the top five, the Houston Rockets picked Kentucky guard Reed Sheppard, the San Antonio Spurs took UConn guard Stephon Castle and the Detroit Pistons went with G League Ignite guard Ron Holland II.

The country of France made more NBA draft history when the Charlotte Hornets took French forward Tidjane Salaün at No. 6. It was the first time where three players from the same country other than the United States went in the top 10 of a single draft.
Donovan Clingan's slide ended at No. 7, where the Portland Trail Blazers selected the UConn center.
The biggest stunner of the night came at No. 8, where the Minnesota Timberwolves traded into the Spurs' slot to grab Kentucky guard Rob Dillingham. Minnesota reportedly gave up a future first-round pick and a first-round swap in the deal.
Back-to-back national player of the year Zach Edey didn't make it out of the top 10, with the Memphis Grizzlies taking the Purdue center at No. 9. Tennessee sharpshooter Dalton Knecht, meanwhile, lasted much longer than expected, falling to the Los Angeles Lakers at No. 17.

What trades were made in the NBA draft first round?
- The first trade of the night came roughly an hour before the draft began. The Wizards dealt forward Deni Avdija to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for guard Malcolm Brogdon, the 14th overall pick, a 2029 first-round pick and two second-round picks, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported. Washington will receive the second-most favorable of Portland's 2029 first-rounders. The Wizards used the No. 14 pick on Pitt guard Bub Carrington.
- On the heels of a Western Conference Finals appearance, the Timberwolves made a big splash by trading up to the Spurs' No. 8 pick to select Kentucky guard Rob Dillingham, according to multiple reports. San Antonio acquired an unprotected 2031 first-rounder and a top-one protected pick swap in 2030 from Minnesota.
- The Phoenix Suns traded the No. 22 pick to the Denver Nuggets in exchange for No. 28, No. 56 and two future second-round picks, according to multiple reports. Denver took Dayton center Da'Ron Holmes II at 22 and Phoenix took Virginia forward Ryan Dunn at No. 28.
- The New York Knicks traded the No. 24 pick to the Wizards in exchange for No. 26 and No. 51, The Athletic's Shams Charania reported. Washington took Miami guard Kyshawn George at 24.
- The Knicks then traded the 26th pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for five second-round picks spanning from 2025 to 2027, according to Charania. OKC took Weber State forward Dillon Jones at 26.
